King Cross Granary City Layers

Layers of topographic space are formed by reintroducing, expanding and opening up the basement level under the existing structure. Within the new urban context, the new Granary serves as an intersecting point to gather different activities.

My design is focused on the landscape. It is mainly materialised by rammed earth and found existing masonry. Re-using the large amount of earth evacuated from the site is not only a sustainability concern, but also reveals the stories of the old Granary in the remaining fragments of the buildings fabric.

Under the skylights of the existing roof, the open spaces on the lower levels can be accessed by the general public. A Convent Garden like market place forms under the big roof of the Assembly Shed. An art institute accommodates the East Transit shed. The West Transit Shed is for commercial uses
